Anthony Gross CBE, RA (1905 - 1984) was one of Britain’s most significant 20th-century artists—an acclaimed painter, printmaker, illustrator, and filmmaker whose work is represented in the Tate, Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, and Imperial War Museum. Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and later in Paris and Madrid, Gross developed a distinctive style defined by fluid line, dynamic composition, and a masterful command of printmaking techniques.

As an official war artist during the Second World War, he created some of the era’s most enduring visual records, accompanying Allied troops through the D-Day landings and campaigns in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. His evocative watercolours and drawings combined documentary precision with a deep sense of humanity.

After the war, Gross illustrated major literary works, including Wuthering Heights and Lord of the Flies, and served as Head of Printing at the Slade, influencing a generation of British printmakers. Elected a Royal Academician in 1980 and awarded the CBE in 1982, his work remains highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
